The useful distinction is underneath
A flokati is a woven textile made from yarn. A genuine sheepskin is a hide with wool attached, processed as a skin rather than woven as a fabric. Both can present a soft wool surface, but the reverse, the shape and the permitted care method are different. Faux sheepskin and sheepskin-shaped woven rugs introduce further categories, so start with a clear product description.
| Question | Woven flokati | Genuine sheepskin |
|---|---|---|
| What is underneath? | A woven foundation; confirm its composition | A processed hide |
| What determines coverage? | Woven dimensions and pile at the edge | Actual outline and any joined pieces |
| Which care method applies? | The exact rug and backing instructions | The exact hide supplier’s instructions |
| What should you request? | Origin, composition and reverse photograph | Material, assembly and reverse photograph |
Do not choose from the silhouette alone
A shaped outline does not prove that a rug is a hide. A rectangular outline does not tell you how several pieces were assembled. Request an image of the reverse and ask whether the product is woven, tufted, a single hide, joined hides or synthetic imitation. This makes material preferences easier to act on without relying on a room photograph.
Compare the area that is usable
An irregular outline can leave less continuous floor coverage than a rectangle with the same maximum width and length. If a furniture foot must be supported, mark its exact location inside the shape. For a bedside landing, think about where your feet actually arrive rather than only the longest dimension of the rug. A rectangular woven rug may offer a different layout even when both options feel similar.
Ask separate questions about care
The wool surface is only part of the care problem. A hide has a processed skin backing; a woven rug has a textile foundation that may contain different fibers. Do not transfer a cleaning recipe from one to the other. Follow the exact supplier’s directions and ask a specialist before treating an old, damaged or valuable piece.
Comfort includes stability
Test the rug with a compatible pad if the maker recommends one. Check that the edges lie acceptably and that small furniture does not wobble on deep pile. Where a route is narrow or heavily used, a lower surface may be easier to manage. For either option, maintenance access and the condition of the floor below deserve attention.
Which one fits your priorities?
Choose according to verified composition, the floor area you need, your preference about animal-hide products and the care you can provide. Neither construction is automatically the better choice for every room. If a seller’s wording remains ambiguous after you ask about the reverse and materials, compare a product with clearer documentation before ordering.
