Flokati Rugs Explained: Wool Pile, Backing & Everyday Use

Learn what makes a flokati rug distinctive, what pile-weight descriptions mean and which details to confirm before buying.

What is a flokati rug?

Flokati is associated with Greek woven wool rugs and a loose, long-pile appearance. A museum example at Metsovo is catalogued as a woolen flokati within its handwoven collection. That is a useful documented reference, but a contemporary product title is not a complete specification. Check where the particular rug was made and what its pile and foundation contain.

Wool pile does not settle the backing question

Greek manufacturer Pantelis Pashalidis & Sons describes both fully wool constructions and versions with a synthetic-fiber backing. This makes the label 100% wool worth reading carefully: does it describe only the visible pile, or also the backing? Ask for the separate composition and written cleaning directions. A white, fluffy surface cannot answer those questions.

How to compare weight descriptions

Some producers describe flokati qualities by grams of wool per square metre. Ask whether a quoted number refers to pile weight or total weight and how the supplier measures it. Compare like with like. A heavier textile may feel different, but weight alone does not tell you whether the edges are secure, the room placement is suitable or the care requirements are manageable.

Plan for the whole pile footprint

Long fibers can soften the visible boundary of a rug, making a photograph harder to judge. Use the woven dimensions for floor planning, then allow for the loose surface at the edges. Check chair feet, small tables and doors with the complete assembly. Avoid relying on a plush surface to hold an unstable piece of furniture in place.

Make care part of the purchase

Request a cleaning method for the exact product, including its backing, size and finishing. Do not assume that a small wool rug is machine washable or that every flokati tolerates the same brush or vacuum setting. Ask how loose fibers should be managed and what would count as abnormal tuft loss. For an older or repaired example, consult a textile cleaner before wet treatment.

Where to use it thoughtfully

A flokati can add tactile contrast beside simpler upholstery or a quieter bed frame. Position it where its surface can be enjoyed and maintained. A dining chair moving repeatedly through deep pile presents a different challenge from a bare foot beside a bed. Confirm that your intended use matches the maker’s guidance, then choose size and color from the options that remain suitable.
