Bedroom Rug Placement: Under-Bed Layouts & Runners

Plan rug coverage from the bed frame, bedside landing space and storage clearance.

Illustrative layout, not to scale. Gold represents the rug; measure your own furniture before choosing a size.

Measure the frame, not just the mattress

A wide headboard, upholstered rails and a footboard can extend beyond the mattress. Measure the outside of the bed and note where your feet land when getting up. Decide whether the rug should cover both sides, the foot, the nightstands or only a bedside landing.

Three workable layouts

A large rug can contain the bed and nightstands. Alternatively, start the rug in front of the nightstands and extend it beyond the lower part of the bed. Separate bedside runners offer a soft landing without putting a large textile under heavy furniture. Mark each layout before choosing.

Worked width example

For a 165 cm frame with a desired 55 cm landing on each side, the target width is 165 + 55 + 55 = 275 cm. Determine length separately from the portion of bed covering the rug and the area you want at the foot. Queen and king labels vary by market, so repeat the calculation with your real frame.

Storage and support

Open under-bed drawers fully. Deep pile or a raised edge can obstruct wheels and clearance. Check wardrobe and room doors, and the route you use at night. Make sure the bed legs remain appropriately supported; putting some legs on a thick rug can create unevenness.

Comfort you can maintain

Consider how you will vacuum under the bed and move the rug for inspection. For runners, test a compatible pad and avoid curled ends. A soft surface is appealing, but stable edges and access for routine cleaning matter just as much in a bedroom.
